It's been a difficult week for Shirley Temple Black's family, but even as they grieve the star's death, they've felt consoled by the millions of fans who have reached out this week.

"Our family is so appreciative of the amazing outpouring of affection for our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother," the family told PEOPLE in a statement.

Temple passed away at the age of 85 on Feb. 10 at her Woodside, Calif., home, surrounded by family and caregivers.

"There was no one like Shirley Temple," says Robert Osborne, friend and host of Turner Classic Movies, of the former child star. "She was the first of her kind, and she was the most enduring of the kind."

Osborne says though the actress and activist always appreciated her film career, her family made her tick. "She was very much into her family. She had a very good marriage. She had a happy life. For somebody who was as famous as Shirley Temple was, she had basically a normal life later on."

Now without their family matriarch, her family says, "We are finding great comfort in the thousands of individual remembrances and condolences from around the world being written with such love and respect in the Remembrance Guest Book at the official website, www.shirleytemple.com.
