Ellen Page may have been keeping her sexuality private prior to her coming out
on Friday, but actress Jane Lynch believes now is not the time to dwell on the past.
In her speech at Friday's Time to THRIVE conference benefitting LGBT youth, Page said she was "tired of lying by omission."
Joining the long list of celebrities
who are applauding Page's decision to speak out, the Glee
star told PEOPLE on Saturday that she can easily relate to the pressure the young actress has faced.
"When I was younger, I lied by omission. She should give herself a break and not call it 'lying,' " Lynch, who is also openly gay, told PEOPLE during the Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards in Hollywood.
"But I know what it is to feel like you can't be open and honest about your orientation. Good for her!"
Following Page's announcement, celebrities took to Twitter to praise the Oscar-nominated actress for her powerful speech.
"Thank you @HRC and everyone for all the love and support. X," Page Tweeted
