Patrick Stewart was mistakenly outed as gay by the British newspaper The Guardian
on Monday in a commentary addressing Ellen Page's coming out
– but the Star Trek
captain handled the snafu by taking to Twitter with warp speed and great humor.
"But @guardian I have, like, five or even SEVEN hetero friends and we totally drink beer and eat lots of chicken wings!" Stewart Tweeted
The 73-year-old X-Men
actor – who wed girlfriend Sunny Ozell
in September in a ceremony officiated by close pal Ian McKellen – then joked: "Well, @guardian it makes for a nice change...at least I didn't wake up to the internet telling me I was dead again."
His final terrific Tweet? "Silly @guardian. You can't catch gay by hanging out with #LGBT people," he wrote, likely alluding to his deep friendship with McKellen, 74, who is openly gay.
Stewart's Tweets were in response to The Guardian
story that originally stated, "Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy."
The paper later ran a correction that said, "This should have read 'Some people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy.' "
