An adoption can be nerve-wracking for new parents – but when there are the added pressures of traveling to another country, wrangling another child and dealing with serious health issues – the stress hits a whole new level.
For Dr. Jennifer Arnold and Bill Klein of TLC's hit reality show The Little Couple
, traveling to India to meet their new daughter Zoey
, 2, was filled with happy anticipation as well as worry about her, and eventually, about Arnold.
"We knew much less about Zoey than we did about Will," Arnold says. "We didn't know what her condition would be."
The couple, who adopted son Will
, 3, from China last year, had a great deal of communication with the staff of the orphanage where he lived, even sending him photographs of themselves so that he recognized them as "Mama" and "Baba" when they met.
Compounding the chaos of Zoey's first meeting was a serious health scare for Arnold, who experienced severe bleeding and had to return home to Houston for treatment. She went through months of intensive chemotherapy
to battle a rare form of cancer
and now is in remission.
PEOPLE has an exclusive sneak peek of the couple's trip to India and their first moments with Zoey (above), ahead of Tuesday night's one-hour season premiere of The Little Couple
on TLC at 10 p.m.
Arnold, 39, a neonatologist at Texas Children's Hospital
