Tom Curry and Van Bernard

Van Bernard was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy type II, a rare and incurable degenerative disease, when he was just 10 months old.

He's been in a power wheelchair since he was 18 months old, and has spent large chunks of time in hospitals. That's why watching this video of him singing the Lumineers' "Ho Hey" is so touching.

The video is from June 2013, when Van performed with his music therapy teacher, Tom Curry, at the Walk for Muscular Dystrophy in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Tens of thousands have already watched it.

Van's family is currently trying to fund the purchase of a wheelchair van for him – as Van has gotten older, it's become difficult to transfer him from his chair to a car seat, to the point where it's no longer safe. The family's a little under halfway to their goal – you can help them out here.
