The actress's swan song, an indie thriller titled Something Wicked, will be released in Eugene, Ore., on April 4. The movie's debut comes four years after the actress, at the age of 32, died in December 2009 from pneumonia, anemia and multiple drug intoxication.
(Five months later, her husband, Simon Monjack, died suddenly under similar circumstances, with the cause of death officially ruled as acute pneumonia and severe anemia.)
Now, audiences can see Murphy in what producer Joe Colleran describes as a "psychological thriller about a young couple embarking on their honeymoon against their parents' wishes. When the parents are tragically taken in an auto accident, gruesome secrets from the couple's past come back to haunt them and ensure this couple does not live happily ever after."
Murphy, says Colleran, "plays a psychiatrist who observes the couple's deteriorating relationship and sets out to determine what sinister forces are driving the madness."
After the movie opens in Eugene – where it was shot – it will expand to Portland and Seattle a week later. Producers eventually hope to roll the film out nationwide.
"I would describe Brittany's performance as the most chilling performance of her career," says Colleran.
Something Wicked also stars Shantel VanSanten (One Tree Hill), John Robinson (Lords of Dogtown), Julian Morris (Once Upon a Time), and James Patrick Stuart (Supernatural).
