A couple moving out of their apartment in Burbank, Calif., on Sunday were in the right place at the right time to save a little boy who had climbed out of a third-story window.
Konrad Lightner and his wife, Jennifer, were carrying boxes to their car when they noticed the toddler and his sister throwing toys out the window. By the time they came out with their mattress, they saw the boy throw his leg over the window sill, ABC7 reports.
"We called 911 and Konrad threw the box spring down to try to break his fall and stood there to catch him," Jennifer says.
Konrad was able to catch the 3-year-old, placing him onto the mattress. "I kind of grabbed him and lowered him real fast to the box spring," Konrad says.
A neighbor summoned the boy's parents, who were unaware of what had happened. The child was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.
"It was very surreal afterwards," Jennifer says. "We were just moving the rest of the day and every once in a while we'd look at each other and just be like, 'That happened. That was real.' "
"It feels like I watched a TV show, like it didn't happen to me," Konrad says. "I'm not a hero. I just walked by and just tried to help. We were lucky to be there."
