Monday's episode of The Voice was filled with smooth, soulful, rocking and soaring duets that made it harder than ever for the coaches to narrow down their teams.

Three-time winner and committed cocktail fan Blake Shelton said of the tightening competition: "My liver's not going to make it."

But each coach got a little help for this second battle round from a charming and buff Chris Martin of Coldplay, who stood in as thoughtful and Brit-tastic lone mentor for all four teams.

Cierra Mickens and T.J. Wilkins showed that they could make an amazing soul duo post-Voice with their duet on Oleta Adams' "Get There" for Team Usher.

"It was perfect, I wouldn't change a thing," raved Shakira, who bowed in praise.

In the end, Usher picked Los Angeles native Wilkins. "T.J. is such a special singer," Shelton said. "It would be hard for anybody to beat him."

Although theirs was a unique pairing of pure country and powerful pop, Jake Worthington and Tess Boyer dazzled in harmony for Team Blake on John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me."

"That was such an A-level performance," Adam Levine said. "I felt like I was watching Blake's CMT Awards or the Grammys. Both of you have shown so many signs of improvement."

Shelton wound up choosing Worthington. "I think he could be a star," he said. "His voice is an authentic country sound. To be able to introduce him to Nashville and the world, that's exciting to me."

But Boyer was not going home this week. Her performance caught the eye of the other three coaches who all tried to steal her. While she started on Team Usher – who wanted her back – Levine and Shakira also put up a fight to win Boyer to their team.

She finally chose Shakira – her third coach of the season – a moment that left the Latin star shaking. "Tess, after what I saw today, you are hands down the best female voice now on The Voice," Shakira told her.

The night's last battle was one of its strongest as Levine paired Josh Kaufman and Delvin Choice, who sang the Stevie Wonder hit "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours" – and earned a standing ovation from the coaches.

"I'm completely blown away," said Usher, calling their duet "the performance of the day."

In the end, Levine settled on Choice, who earned praise from Shakira as "solid, precise and tasteful."

"It was flawless," Levine said. So much so, that Usher used his lone steal to scoop Kaufman up for his team.

Also moving forward Tuesday were Patrick Thomson, who delivered both trademark growl and some rock swagger for Team Shakira on Bryan Adams' "Run to You," beating out Josh Murley. Christina Grimmie continues on for Team Adam, ousting Sam Behymer after a high-energy, girl-powered battle on One Republic's "Counting Stars." For Team Blake, Audra McLaughlin remains after a tough fight with Megan Ruger on the Miley Cyrus hit "The Climb."

The Voice's round 2 battles continue Tuesday (8 p.m. ET) on NBC.
