Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher is showing "moments of consciousness and awakening," his manager says, more than three months after suffering serious head trauma in a skiing accident in the French Alps.

The German race car driver, 45, fell and hit his head on a rock on Dec. 29. He was put in a medically induced coma. These are the most encouraging signs yet in his slow recovery, says manager Sabine Kehm.

"Michael is making progress," Kehm says in a written statement, according to Germany's n-tv. "He shows moments of consciousness and awakening. We stand with him in his long and difficult struggle, together with the team at the hospital in Grenoble, and we remain confident."

Kehm adds: "We thank you for your continued interest. At the same time, we ask again for your understanding that we do not want to go into details to protect Michael's privacy and that of his family and to have the team of doctors work in peace."

Schumacher retired from racing in 2012 after a 19-year career that included seven Formula 1 world titles.
