Though she wasn't exactly invited onto the stage by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, who was inducting the band, Love took to the podium alongside Grohl, Novoselic and Cobain's mother, Wendy, and sister, Kimberly. After the remaining Nirvana members gave their acceptance speeches, Love picked up the mic to a loud round of boos from the crowd.
"You know, I have a big speech, but I'm not gonna say it," Love, 49, said. She then added: "This is my family I'm looking at right now. Brother Michael [Stipe], brother Krist, Mr. Grohl." She then turned to give Grohl a hug – marking the first time they've been publicly cordial together in a decade. "I just wish Kurt were here to feel this and be this ... He really would have appreciated it," she said.
Although Love had recently said daughter Frances Bean Cobain, 21, would also be on hand at the ceremony, she was noticeably absent. "I just want to give this to Frances, our daughter, who's not here because she's ill," Love explained.
A feud between Love and Grohl, 45, first erupted in 2004, when the two engaged in a legal battle over Nirvana's music. It then escalated in 2012, when Love Tweeted that Grohl had hit on her daughter – a claim both Cobain and Grohl vehemently denied.
Even though Love told Rolling Stone in February that the awards ceremony would probably be awkward, earlier this week she let The Telegraph know there was no way she'd miss the occasion.
"I wasn't in Nirvana, but that's what widows and kids do. And it does give me ownership of the mythology, rather than just handing over to Krist and Dave their ownership," she told the paper. She also got in another dig at Grohl when talking about her upcoming music project.
In addition to Nirvana, other acts inducted into the Hall of Fame at the ceremony included Peter Gabriel, Kiss and Hall & Oates.
