Serious issues of weight and health were the themes of several PEOPLE stories that got strong reactions from readers this week.
One uplifting story about child's weight loss was counterbalanced by a more controversial one about a Yale student's low weight. Luckily, Jennifer Garner
was also on hand for comic relief in talking about her son's body parts.
Below, check out the five stories that got the strongest reactions on PEOPLE.com this week. And let us know what you think of every story by clicking on the icons at the bottom.
Readers loved our follow-up story about Alexis Shapiro, a Texas girl who underwent obesity surgery in March. Alexis, 12, who has a metabolic condition that caused her to gain 151 lbs. and left her constantly hungry, is showing signs of improvement.
She has lost 6 lbs.
and no longer needs insulin or other medication to control type 2 diabetes.
Another story about weight left readers feeling incredulous: the story of Frances Chan, a 5'2" history student at Yale University who weighs 92 lbs. – which the school apparently thinks is too light.
A clinician told her she would be required to meet for weekly weigh-ins and allegedly threatened to put her on medical leave if she did not comply.
The story that left readers the angriest was the horrifying case of Alexis Catherine Greene, who died when she was just six weeks old. An autopsy found enough morphine in her brain, liver and blood to kill an adult, and this week her mother, Stephanie Greene, was sentenced to 20 years in prison
after being convicted of charges including homicide by child abuse after passing the drugs on through her breastmilk.
Another tragic case, prompting the saddest reaction from readers, was the death of Peaches Geldof,
daughter of the rocker Bob Geldof, at age 25. The model, writer and mother of two was found dead Monday in a house in Kent. An autopsy was inconclusive
. The results of toxicology tests will take several more weeks.
Finally, a little levity – also body related. Stopping by The Tonight Show
to talk about her new movie Draft Day
and her kids, Jennifer Garner
revealed just how happy husband Ben Affleck
is to have a son. "He loves his girls, but he's serious about his son right now," she said. "So he taught him about his bits.
He taught him about his P and two N's."
