"It really helped me out a lot to get away and have my son with me," Harris told PEOPLE after Wednesday night's performance show. Their time together was the first since Harris became an American Idol top 12 contestant more than two months ago.
"I would get done with my day around 7 p.m. and would run over there and stay with him until around 1 a.m.," said the doting father.
Harris told reporters he spent the past week "glued to" his son, who reinvigorated his passion to do well in the FOX reality singing competition.
"It reminded me that I have something to do," said Harris. "I just stayed focused on working on my pitch and my rhythm on my guitar."
Harris even had a little help from Jordan on the latter goal.
"He crawled up in my lap and we played the guitar together," Harris added. "I loved spending time with him because I don't know when I'll see him again."
But if Harris's performance of John Mayer's "Gravity" did not score him enough votes to make it through another week of the competition, he takes solace in knowing his plane ride home will be alone.
"Tonight, I said, 'Hey, my son is over there. If I am going home, I am going home with him," he said.
