DIET
• When it comes to dieting, Dixie Chick Natalie Maines, 28, is not afraid to try new things. "I did the Zone, the Atkins, and now I'm on a vegetarian diet," she told InStyle in July 2002. "I like to change it up to shock my system, because every diet stops working after a while."

• To prepare for her role as a track star in the 1982 film Personal Best, Mariel Hemingway adopted a demanding fitness regimen and ate a fat-free, low-protein diet consisting mostly of fruits, vegetables and popcorn. But the plan ended up making her unhealthy, she told PEOPLE in May 2002. These days Hemingway, 41, does yoga and eats a more balanced diet, including fish, eggs and some butter, as well as organic produce. "I eat more like a regular person," she said.

• Though R&B singer Mya looked more than comfortable in the skin-tight lingerie she wore for the "Lady Marmalade" video, nothing prepared her for the skimpy costumes she donned in the Oscar-nominated Chicago. How did the already-slim diva, 24, get ready for the big-screen musical? By cutting out meat. "When I saw the risqué costumes for Chicago, I wanted to be more toned," she told InStyle in July 2002. "I thought being a vegetarian was going to be temporary, but I've stuck with it because I feel less tired and lighter on my feet."

Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker and hubby Matthew Broderick welcomed their first child, James, to their family in October 2002, but Parker, 38, was sex-symbol slim again in about three months. Sure, she exercised with a personal trainer and cut back on sweets. But her real trick in losing baby weight comes straight from Mother Nature: "breast-feeding definitely helps," she told PEOPLE in February. In fact, breast-feeding burns about 500 calories a day, the magazine noted.

• When Melrose Place alum and Neutrogena spokesmodel Josie Bissett had her first child (son Mason) in 1999, she had trouble getting back to her pre-pregnancy weight. She exercised a lot but just couldn't seem to lose those last five to seven pounds. So – under the guidance of her doctor – she went on a so-called cleansing fast. "For seven days I drank herbal shakes and then gradually added food back into my diet," the slim blonde, 32, told InStyle in May 2001. "The pounds came off. It was the kick-start I needed to eat right again."
