Police May Question Gary Condit Again

As forensic experts in Washington work to determine the cause of death of former federal intern Chandra Levy, whose remains were discovered in a D.C.-area park this week, Police Chief Charles Ramsey said Thursday that authorities may re-interview several people, including Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.), reports the Associated Press. But The Washington Post reports Friday morning that Condit's Los Angeles-based attorney, Mark Geragos, said the discovery of Levy's remains after the 13-month mystery of her disappearance will help clear his client of all suspicion and that Condit, 54, will gladly sit for police questioning. "I honestly believe it will exonerate him," Geragos told the paper Thursday. "We'll cooperate at any time." Condit has already been interviewed four times by police. "Perhaps we'll need to talk again. I don't know. Those decisions have not been made," Ramsey said on NBC's "Today" show Thursday. Levy's parents are remaining in seclusion in their California home, grieving in private with their son, Adam, and a few friends, according to news reports. "Two parents have just received the most horrifying news that any parent could ever get," family spokeswoman Judy Smith said outside Robert and Susan Levy's home on Thursday. Police sources told PEOPLE last year that Condit acknowledged he had an affair with Levy, and, in August, in his first magazine interview since her disappearance, he told PEOPLE that he and Levy were "friends." Condit issued this statement through his attorney Wednesday: "Congressman Gary Condit and his family want to express their heartfelt sorrow and condolences to the Levy family." Friday morning on "Today," Levy family spokeswoman Kim Petersen said plans for a memorial service are still pending.
