There were plenty of memories to be thankful for on Wednesday, as legendary comedian Bob Hope turned 99 surrounded by family members amid an outpouring of good wishes from around the country. There has actually been a celebration all week at the Hope house in Toluca Lake, Calif., near Universal City, the Associated Press reports. Hope's wife, Dolores, turned 93 on Monday. On Wednesday she spoke for her husband, who was taking it easy at home, at the dedication of the Bob Hope Veterans Chapel at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in Westwood. "Speaking with Bob today," said Mrs. Hope, as quoted by the AP, "I whispered in his ear that we were coming out for this, and although he can't respond very much vocally, he had just the most beautiful smile. He knew what was going on and wishes he could be here." Because Bob is not officially a veteran -- though he entertained generations of them -- President Bush quietly signed into law the approval for the site to be named for the British-born comic, who came to America as a 4-year-old, the AP reports. Ward Grant, Hope's longtime publicist, told the AP that next year Bob should still be celebrating. "His grandfather lived to be 99 and 11 months, and he's always joked about wanting to top him," Grant said. "So 99 is a good milestone, but we're busy planning his 100th birthday." As Dolores Hope recently told PEOPLE.com, "I bet Bob will make it to 100. I know I plan to."
