John Lennon Makes TV Ad Debut

06/02/1999 at 12:00 AM EDT

Imagine John Lennon making his TV advertising debut, resurrected to star alongside UK TV and radio personality Chris Evans in a mobile phone commercial. The ad, which melds old footage from Lennon's and Yoko Ono's "bed-in" for peace in Amsterdam with new footage with Evans, will begin airing on British TV next week, reports Variety. Unlike in the U.S., UK advertisers do not necessarily need the permission of a deceased celebrity's estate in order to use his or her image. (Nevertheless, the cell phone company, One2One, sought permission from Yoko as a courtesy. She asked that they donate money to a British charity.) Apple computer has been running a similar image of Lennon and Ono on billboards, with Ono reportedly requiring Apple to supply needy schools with free computers in exchange.
