After eight seasons "Home Improvement" star Tim Allen is calling it quits. "This is the end of the road," he told TV journalists visiting the set of the top-rated ABC sitcom. "I don't know how many different ways I can say it," he continued, "but when it's just about the money and it's just about the ratings, then it's just about over." Allen, who is TV's highest-paid star and makes $1.5 million per episode, says he intends to pursue his still-fledgling movie career. The final "Home Improvement" episode will air in May.

  • In other news of a departing nature, Sharon Lawrence, voicing disappointment with the way her character has been handled, says she intends to leave ABC's "NYPD Blue" after the end of this season. The announcement was said to have been a surprise to both the show's co-creator, Steven Bochco, and the network.
