"Varsity Blues," with James Van Der Beek, remained the most popular film in North America for the second consecutive weekend, while the new Sharon Stone movie "Gloria" flopped spectacularly. According to studio estimates, "Varsity Blues" scored $10.6 million in ticket sales Friday-to-Sunday, bringing its 10-day total to $30.1 million. The top four films were unchanged from last week, with "Patch Adams" holding at No. 2 for the third consecutive weekend (with $8.1 million). "A Civil Action" followed with $7.6 million and "The Thin Red Line" with $5.8 million. "Stepmom" rose a notch to No. 5 with $5.2 million. "Gloria," director Sidney Lumet's remake of a film that starred Gena Rowlands, earned just $2.1 million for the three-day period and did not even make the top 10.
