Britain's biggest hit of last year, "Believe" by Cher, has shot to No. 1 in America -- her first chart-topper in her home country in 25 years. "I am thrilled," she told the British Press Association. "The whole thing started in Britain." The single debuted at No. 1 on the British charts and stayed there for seven weeks, becoming the biggest seller of 1998.

  • In other music news: Oasis have been waiting to put their court battle with their ex-drummer Tony McCarroll behind them before they start work in earnest on their fourth album. They have been secretly rehearsing 22 new songs written by Noel Gallagher and could start recording next month with the album due out later next month. "It's wicked. If I told you any more I would have to kill you, wouldn't I?" singer Liam Gallagher told the New Musical Express.
