SUSAN SARANDON ARRESTED

03/30/1999 at 12:00 AM EST

Susan Sarandon was among 219 people arrested at New York police headquarters Thursday -- the 13th day of civil disobedience protests over the police shooting of unarmed African immigrant Amadou Diallo. "If we're not here today, then we're saying that what happened is acceptable and normal, and I think that does a disservice to the other police," said the Oscar-winning actress. "I think it's time we focus on this issue, and racial profiling is not acceptable. I don't think we want to be made safe at the expense of our civil liberties."

  • More than 800 people have been arrested for the symbolic acts of civil disobedience since the workday rallies started on March 9. Those arrested have included actors Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, former Mayor David Dinkins, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and a number of congressmen and local politicians.

  • Diallo was hit by 19 of 41 bullets fired by four officers in the vestibule of his Bronx home in February. A grand jury investigating the shooting indicted four police officers on Thursday on charges of second-degree murder. They are expected to surrender at a police precinct stationhouse Monday.
