"Analyze This" and "Forces of Nature" tied for fourth with $6.3 million. "EDtv" dropped to sixth place after losing 45% of its audience in its second week.

Keanu Reeves, who has stumbled at the box office since his 1994 hit "Speed," bounced back at the box office last weekend with "The Matrix." The flashy sci-fi film earned about $27.6 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period, for the biggest opening weekend this year, industry estimates showed Sunday. It was also the best opening for Reeves since 1994, when "Speed" took in $14.5 million in its debut. "10 Things I Hate About You," an updated, teen-centered version of the Shakespearean classic "The Taming of the Shrew," was a distant second with $8.7 million.
