Keanu Reeves, who has stumbled at the box office since his 1994 hit "Speed," bounced back at the box office last weekend with "The Matrix." The flashy sci-fi film earned about $27.6 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period, for the biggest opening weekend this year, industry estimates showed Sunday. It was also the best opening for Reeves since 1994, when "Speed" took in $14.5 million in its debut. "10 Things I Hate About You," an updated, teen-centered version of the Shakespearean classic "The Taming of the Shrew," was a distant second with $8.7 million.

  • "The Out-Of-Towners," a loose remake starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn of the 1970 comedy about an out-of-town couple in New York City, was third with $8.1 million. "Analyze This" and "Forces of Nature" tied for fourth with $6.3 million. "EDtv" dropped to sixth place after losing 45% of its audience in its second week.
