Oscar-winner Kathy Bates (who played Molly Brown in "Titanic") has signed on to play the shrewish orphanage matron Miss Hannigan in a TV adaptation of the Broadway musical "Annie." The show is being produced for the 1999-2000 season of ABC's "Wonderful World of Disney" by the same company that made "Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella." Miss Hannigan was originated by Tony-winner Dorothy Loudon. Carol Burnett played the part in the 1982 movie.

  • The title role in the new "Annie" has been given to 11-year-old Alicia Morton, who currently sings the role of the young Cosette in Broadway's "Les Miserables."
