For his first foray into TV, Mel Gibson will coproduce a picture about three of his favorite stars: Larry Fine and Moe and Curly Howard. Variety reports that ABC and Columbia Pictures have purchased the option for an upcoming Stooges bio by Daily Variety columnist Michael Fleming, "From Amalgamated Morons to American Icons: The Three Stooges," for Gibson's Icon Pictures and Storyline Entertainment. The film is set to air during a sweeps period in 2000. The producers are hoping to make the Stooges film a star-studded affair, with Mel (who has paid homage to the eye-jabbing trio in his "Lethal Weapon" movies) possibly playing a small role. The TV pic will tell the story of the Stooges' rise from vaudevillians in the '20s to Hollywood slapstick stars.
