Elton Gets Pacemaker

Elton John walked out of a London hospital Saturday after having a heart operation to install a pacemaker. "I feel very well. I'm a bit stiff, a bit sore, but everything went really well," he told reporters outside London's Wellington Hospital. The surgical procedure, considered commonplace today, took place after doctors discovered that Elton, 52, had an irregular heartbeat.

  • Also leaving the hospital Saturday: former New York City mayor and "People's Court" judge Ed Koch, 74, more than a week after he suffered a minor heart attack. During his hospital stay he received a new pacemaker. (He received his first one after a minor stroke in 1987.) "I have no fear of death," Koch said before leaving Presbyterian Hospital. "But I want to go all at once, not slice by slice."
