Legendary Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman ("Fanny and Alexander") concedes that as a young man he admired Adolf Hitler. Bergman long ago acknowledged that he was a Nazi sympathizer in his youth, but this is the first time he has talked about his admiration for Hitler. In an interview with a Swedish tabloid, Bergman, 81, says he was "really disinterested in politics but impressed by the German's ideals." He says Nazism "seemed fun and youthful" at the time and he found Hitler "unbelievably charismatic." He even admits that he and some young friends once painted swastikas on a house belonging to a Jewish director. Bergman says learning what Hitler and the Nazis had done during World War II "was a hideous shock."
