By swapping his trademark black cowboy hat for a stringy black hairpiece to become the fictional rocker Chris Gaines on a new album "Garth Brooks in . . . The Life of Chris Gaines," country superstar Garth Brooks drew a strange reaction from New York Times reviewer Neil Straus. The critic called the CD "a good album that I will probably never listen to again." Straus compared it to "a movie one relishes while watching but completely forgets afterward." Conceptually, he wrote, "Brooks deserves a pat on the hat for the undertaking."
