Dr. Laura: Surf's Up

12/15/1998 at 12:00 AM EST

The owner of a Newport Beach, Calif., surf shop has countersued radio talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger for slander. The radio therapist sued Tom Moore, owner of the Beach Access chain, after he said she lied when she told her audience he put pornography in a place clearly visible to children. Moore has filed a $4 million counter-lawsuit, alleging she painted him in a false light and intentionally harmed his business. Dr. Laura told her audience two months ago that Moore was guilty of putting "pornography" -- Big Brother Skateboarding magazine -- on store racks in front of children. The magazine is aimed primarily at teen-age boys and, in some issues, runs sexually graphic and sometimes violent stories.
