A pearl necklace, which once belonged to the late American socialite Barbara Hutton and is reputed to have come from the jewel box of French Queen Marie-Antoinette, sold for a world record $1.4 million Tuesday, Christie's said. A European buyer who asked to remain anonymous is the new owner of the single-strand necklace of 41 rare and large graduated pearls, held together by a diamond cluster clasp. The stunning piece, which set a "record auction price for a natural pearl necklace," according to the auction house, belonged to Hutton (1912-1979), heiress of the Woolworth chain of stores and one of Cary Grant's five wives.
