Beanie Babies on the Ballot
Citing a flood of letters it said it had received from children all around the world, the toymaker Ty Inc. announced on Christmas Eve (ho ho ho) that it will put to a vote website as to whether or not to proceed with its announced plans to cease manufacture of Beanie Babies on Dec. 31. "After much thought," Ty Warner, president of the Illinois-based company, posted on the site, "I am willing to put the fate of Beanie Babies in your hands." The balloting starts Friday on the Ty website, will last two days and will cost each voter 50 cents (charged to a credit card) -- the proceeds of which will go to the Elizabeth Glaser AIDS Foundation.
