Linda Tripp's Up

11/24/1998 at 12:00 AM EST

Linda Tripp is likely to face trial after Maryland Judge Diane O. Leasure ruled on Tuesday that the immunity Tripp was granted by Kenneth Starr's independent counsel did not apply to state wiretapping charges against her. Tripp secretly tape-recorded conversations with her then-friend, Monica Lewinsky, which led to the Clinton sex scandal. Maryland prosecutors also revealed in court that Tripp had regularly regaled her bridge club members with tales of unwittingly taping a woman named Monica, whom Tripp said was having an affair with the President, and even invited Lewinsky to her Christmas party so Tripp's neighbors, who had also heard the stories, could gaze at her.
