Working to scuttle her image as a New York carpetbagger, Hillary Rodham Clinton managed to charm "the big guy," as she called him: "Late Show" host David Letterman. "OK," Dave said at the outset of Wednesday's interview, "I know you just moved to the area. So why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself." "Well, Dave," she replied, "you know, I grew up in the Midwest, just like you. My mother's name is Dorothy, just like yours. We have so much in common that I had to follow you here." Asked if her husband knew where she was, she said, "Don't tell him." (Dave also wondered why President Clinton seemed to consider him "a boob," and Mrs. Clinton sarcastically suggested that maybe it was because Dave never cracked any jokes about him.) On the subject of Mrs. Clinton's probable Senate-race opponent, New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani -- a frequent "Late Show" guest -- Dave advised: "I don't want to tell you how to run your campaign, but if you want to do any dirty campaigning, go for Giuliani's hair. It drives him nuts. He's got that millennium comb-over thing happening."
