Candidates Need Laugh Track
Robin Williams they weren't. Republican Presidential candidates George W. Bush and John McCain appeared with TV's late show hosts last night, and both demonstrated how they need to polish their punchline skills. "How do you look so youthful and rested?" David Letterman asked Texas governor Bush, who was beamed into Letterman's Manhattan studio via satellite from St. Louis, on CBS's "Late Show." "Fake it," Bush answered. "And that's pretty much how you're going to run the country?" was Letterman's retort. (Bush laughed.) Asked by Dave what he means when he says he's a uniter and not a divider, George W. explained, "That means when it comes time to sew up your chest cavity, we use stitches as opposed to opening it up." Letterman shrugged off the answer. Meanwhile, on NBC's "Tonight," Jay Leno asked McCain if his reputation for having a hot temper was deserved. McCain said it was not. "Every year in the Senate, I win Miss Congeniality," quipped the Arizona Senator. He elicited few laughs.
