- In other news of Oscar, Motion Picture Association president Jack Valenti issued a statement yesterday in defense of controversial film "The Hurricane." Groups objecting to the film's depiction of the real-life story of wrongly imprisoned boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (played by best actor nominee Denzel Washington) reportedly tried to take out trade ads asking Academy members to not vote for Washington. Valenti, a fan of the film, wrote, "The tragedy of this avalanche of censure is that it intrudes on the message of the movie which illuminates the rightness of American justice."
