Kevin Spacey has selected his first movie role since being named Oscar's best actor for "American Beauty" last Sunday. He has committed to the movie adaptation of author E. Annie Proulx's 1993 bestseller (which also won the Pulitzer and National Book Awards), "The Shipping News," reports Variety. The film, which will be directed by Lasse Hallstrom ("The Cider House Rules"), has been in the gestating stage for a long time. John Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, had been planning to star, until they withdrew last June. Besides Spacey, no other performer has been mentioned, nor has a start date been announced. The story concerns a miserable 36-year-old widower who moves to Newfoundland and begins writing the local shipping news. At the moment, Spacey is shooting the movie "Pay It Forward," costarring Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment.
