Ruby Slippers Fetch a Fortune
Dorothy's ruby slippers have a new home this morning, and it's not in Kansas. For $666,000, Los Angeles collector Dave Elkouby, 36, has purchased the glittery red shoes worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 classic "The Wizard of Oz." The pair came up for sale at a mega-auction of Hollywood memorabilia yesterday at New York's Christie's East. Elkouby told Reuters that he plans to place his new treasure on display -- as soon as he opens a museum. Other items in the sale included "Oz" costar Bert Lahr's Cowardly Lion paw-like shoe ($25,850), the 1937 Phantom III Rolls-Royce from the James Bond flick "Goldfinger" ($402,000) and Christopher Reeve's Superman man costume ($56,400).
