'Early Show': Neighborly Feud

More bad news for CBS's basement-rated "Early Show," with Bryant Gumbel. Its studio, at 59th Street and 5th Avenue in Manhattan, is located in one of the ritziest residential parts of town and the neighbors there don't like the noise that the show is making, especially when rock bands perform in the plaza outside. (NBC's "Today" is in Rockefeller Center, which is comprised entirely of office buildings, while ABC's "Good Morning America" broadcasts from Times Square, a commercial center.) The New York Times reports that residents of the Sherry-Netherland Hotel, which contains several permanent tenants and sits adjacent to the CBS studio, have gone to court to block future outdoor performances. A lawyer for CBS told the Times that it is the city that has jurisdiction over New York's noise codes, not the courts. A decision in the case has yet to be made.
