Lawrence E. Ledent, 38, the trucker accused of stealing 55 Oscar statuettes weeks before the Academy Awards, pleaded no contest to a count of grand theft in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday. He was sentenced to six months in jail (to begin on Aug. 8) and five years probation. He must also pay $50,000 restitution to his former employers, Roadway Express, from whose warehouse the Oscars disappeared. The sum represents the reward money paid by the company to salvage man Willie Fulgear, who found Hollywood's most coveted golden statuettes in a dumpster a week before the March 26 Academy Awards show. Ledent must also dig into his pockets and pay $1,050 to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences -- or, $350 for each Oscar still missing.
