Carrey's Good News, Bad News

09/01/1998 at 12:00 AM EDT

Talk about split personalities: Although the Jim Carrey movie "Me, Myself & Irene" came in No. 1 at the box office this weekend, the grosses for the gross comedy's opening ($24.2 million) are considered disappointing by industry analysts, who had higher expectations. In 1995, Carrey's "Ace Venture: When Nature Calls" hauled in $37.5 million its first weekend, while 1998's "The Truman Show" took in $31.5 million. (By contrast, the dud "Man on the Moon" did $7.5 million last Christmas.) On the other hand, the delightful "Chicken Run" had what is being called the biggest opening for an animated feature in the history of DreamWorks, surpassing that of the company's bug hit "Antz." Oops, make that BIG hit. The weekend estimates:
1. "Me, Myself & Irene," $24.2 million.

2. "Chicken Run," $17.5 million.

3. "Shaft," $13.3 million.

4. "Gone in 60 Seconds," $9.5 million.

5. "Big Momma's House," $8.7 million.

6. "Mission: Impossible 2," $8 million.

7. "Gladiator," $4 million.

8. "Titan A.E.," $3.7 million.

9. "Dinosaur," $3.5 million.

10. "Boys and Girls," $3.1 million.
