The scene was quiet outside the downtown Manhattan building where John Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy lived. Yesterday marked the first anniversary of the air crash that claimed their lives, as well as that of Carolyn's sister, Lauren Bessette. Friends and relatives were said to be mourning in private, while the only public display was a small driftwood memorial bearing the names of the victims, erected Sunday on Philbin Beach along the coast of Martha's Vineyard (closest to the area where the Piper Saratoga went down). Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that Kennedy's legacy, his political magazine George, may be in trouble. Though paid circulation is strong, reportedly 558,600 by the end of 1999 (up from 402,900 from the year before), ad revenues have plunged and George is said to be losing $7 million annually. Its parent firm, Hachette Filipacchi, told the Post that it is committed to another year of George, at least.
