NBC's "Will & Grace" beat out such established hits as "Frasier," "Friends" and "Everybody Loves Raymond," to be named best comedy series at the Emmy Awards. Co-creator Max Mutchnick (who, like two of the lead characters on his show, is openly gay) looked at the Emmy in his hand and said that he finally "met a girl I want to sleep with." Supporting players Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes also won for their roles. But Will and Grace themselves, actors Eric McCormack and Debra Messing, didn't win. Best actress in a comedy series went to Patricia Heaton from "Everybody Loves Raymond," while best actor went to Michael J. Fox, who took home his first Emmy for "Spin City," having exited the show at last season's finale. (He picked up three in a row for his '80s series, "Family Ties.") He will now devote his time to fighting Parkinson's disease, which is afflicting him. Following a standing ovation last night, Fox told the crowd, "Thanks. It's been a great ride and stay tuned."
