"Ali," a proposed $105 million movie biography of Muhammad Ali to star Will Smith, is involved in the fight of its life. The high-profile project, to be directed by Michael Mann (TV's "Miami Vice" and last year's Oscar contender "The Insider"), is reportedly in jeopardy because Mann told Sony studio bosses that he could not guarantee to bring the picture in on budget. For months, the slim Smith has been in training to fill out his form to look like the heavyweight champ. But now, both Variety and the Hollywood Reporter are suggesting that Smith's bulking up may have been in vain. (The box office disappointment of "The Hurricane," starring Denzel Washington as the fighter "Hurricane" Carter, is said to have added to Sony's qualms about proceeding with the Ali picture.) Today, reports Variety, Sony and director Mann (who Smith chose over Spike Lee, who reportedly wanted to do the picture) are expected to reach a yea or nay decision on the project.
