'Dr. Laura' Fading Away?
In what is looking like a quick walk to the TV graveyard, the embattled syndicated talk show "Dr. Laura," hosted by controversial radio star Laura Schlessinger, 53, is being booted from its cozy afternoon timeslots into the pre-dawn hours. The 9-week-old show, which was boycotted by gay activists well before it took to the air (due to Schlessinger's vocal view of homosexuality as "a biological error"), has struggled to find an audience and advertisers. CBS-owned stations have now announced that "Dr. Laura" has lost its daytime perches in such key markets as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas and Austin, Texas. In Philadelphia, Dr. Laura was moved from CBS to the UPN station and re-scheduled for 4:30 a.m. "If this is not a fatal blow," industry analyst Bill Carroll, told the New York Post, "it is pretty close to it."
