Pets.com, an online supplier of pet products, has bit the dust, but its popular mascot will live on. The New York Times reports that other retailers are seeking the mouthy Sock Puppet, which has already spawned its own line of dolls. First, though, it will have to be decided who exactly owns the rights to the puppet, the ad firm that created it (he?) or the consulting firm that helped develop products tied to the character. Also being debated is the wisdom of adopting a mascot of a failed company, says The Times, which couldn't get any of the parties involved to say exactly which companies are seeking the character. Still, the paper did have an update on the lawsuit between Pets.com and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" writer Robert Smigel, who is Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. (Pets.com claimed that the reputedly scatological Triumph created "an unsavory mental association" with Sock Puppet.) With the demise of Pets.com, a lawyer for the company told The Times, it seems likely that the lawsuit will just die away, too. A triumph for Triumph.
