Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney was released from Washington's George Washington Hospital on Friday after suffering what doctors called a mild heart attack. He had complained of chest pains and was rushed to the hospital early Wednesday. He reportedly has been placed on a blood thinner for the next 30 days as a means of thwarting likely problems in the area where surgeons inserted a stainless steel stent to prop open clogged arteries following Cheney's angioplasty. Meanwhile, Cheney's running mate, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, accepted a win in Florida, saying he was "humbled and honored." State suits and a U.S. Supreme Court decision (which the Bush camp had requested) still put an ultimate decision in the 2000 presidential race on hold, however. Furthermore, the Democratic challenger, Vice President Al Gore, vows to fight on.
