Fire, Ice . . . and STARS
Piloted by Lilly Tartikoff, widow of TV executive Brandon Tartikoff, and hosted by "Friends" stars Courteney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Aniston, last night's Fire and Ice Ball in Beverly Hills brought out the stars and raised money for the Revlon/UCLA Women's Cancer Research Program. "This is the noisiest audience I've ever played for," the evening's entertainer, music man Burt Bacharach, told a black-tie crowd that included Dylan McDermott, Sela Ward, Brendan Fraser, Dennis Franz, Christian Slater, Jennifer Love Hewitt and David Arquette, who admitted to PEOPLE, "My wife tied my tie for me." On a more somber note, Franz said that he was at the benefit because cancer has touched his family many times. "I lost my father to colon cancer. I have a sister who is a breast cancer survivor, and my wife is a cervical cancer survivor. I'm very thankful that I have two survivors." Jennifer Love Hewitt noted that cancer screening is vital, telling PEOPLE, "I'm a worry wart as it is, (but) I have an amazing doctor who takes really good care of me." On a less serious but still personal note, Hewitt said she dressed carefully (in a Richard Tyler number) for the event, "because this year I was nominated Worst Dressed (by PEOPLE), so now I have even more pressure, because I know people are going, 'There's the sucky dresser. Let's see what she's pulled out of her closet for tonight.' "
