Eminem, 26, has expressed a negative reaction to the Grammys in his lyrics, but gay, lesbian and women's rights activists are expressing outright outrage over his four Grammy nominations, announced last Wednesday. Activists say that the rapper's lyrics, especially those in "The Marshall Mathers LP," incite violence, and that honoring him sends the wrong message to artists and the entertainment industry. "(Eminem's) lyrics are the most homophobic and hateful that GLAAD has ever seen in the past 15 years," Scott Seomin, entertainment media director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said in a statement. Michael Greene, president and CEO of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), the organization behind the Grammys, responded to the charge by saying, "I would be incredibly surprised if they weren't upset." He also called the rapper's CD "arguably the most repugnant recording of the year (though) in many ways it's also one of the most remarkable recordings of the year." Eminem's management and label said they have no response to activists' comments, and that the musician has made no decision whether or not to attend the Grammys. Similarly, GLAAD is said to be weighing the decision of whether or not to protest the ceremony, to be held Feb. 21 at Los Angeles' Staples Center.
