Globes: Nods to Julia, Mel, Russell

Not unexpectedly, Julia Roberts nabbed a Golden Globe nomination (as best actress in a drama for her feisty protagonist role in this year's "Erin Brockovich"), as did such other big screen names as Michael Douglas (for his starring role in "Wonderboys"), Russell Crowe ("Gladiator"), Jim Carrey ("Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas"), Joan Allen ("The Contender"), Mel Gibson ("What Women Want") and Sandra Bullock ("Miss Congeniality"). The Globes, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, often indicate how the Oscar nominations will shape up. Unlike the Oscars, though, they split the categories of drama and comedy (or musical), as well as honor TV shows and performers. On the small screen, nominations went to some familiar faces (the stars of "The West Wing," "The Sopranos," "Ally McBeal," "Will & Grace," "Frasier," "Sex and the City" and "Everybody Loves Raymond"), as well as to such newcomers as Jessica Alba from "Dark Angel," Andre Braugher from "Gideon's Crossing" and "CSI," CBS's new surprise hit crime drama. The 58th Golden Globes ceremony will be broadcast live on NBC from Beverly Hills on Sun., Jan. 21.
