Santana High Reopens

Santana High School in Santee, Calif., near San Diego, reopened its doors Wednesday, offering counseling, hugs and light class schedules to its 1,900 students as they returned after a shooting spree that took place on campus Monday. Two students were killed and 13 other people were wounded. In the nearby suburb of El Cajon, the alleged shooter, Charles Andrew Williams (known as Andy), 15, made his first court appearance. In a session that lasted only five minutes, Williams's lawyer, a public defendant, requested a postponement of arraignment in order to give him time to decide whether or not to challenge the constitutionality of a new California law that requires his client to be tried as an adult. Williams was described by several news sources as appearing calm but lost. No member of his family was said to be present.
