Taking the stand Wednesday in the gun possession and bribery trial of rap mogul Sean "Puffy" Combs, Det. Joseph Sweeney testified to the statement of prosecution witness Matthew "Scar" Allen, which Sweeney read to the courtroom, reports PEOPLE. Allen's words claimed that Allen and Combs knew one another from previous encounters before the Dec. 27, 1999, shooting incident that took place at Club New York. (Combs, 31, bodyguard Anthony "Wolf" Jones, 34, and rap protege Jamal "Shyne" Barrow, 21, are on trial on charges stemming from that night.) In describing events leading up to the gunfire, Sweeney, reading Allen's words, said that Combs was leaving the club. "At one point he reached over me and knocked me and the glass I was holding into the bar. At the time, I didn't realize who had pushed me." Realizing it was Combs, Allen recalled, "He started saying, 'What's up, what's up?' And I said, 'F--- you.' " As the two of them screamed at each other, said Allen, "one of the guys against the bar threw money at Puffy." (This guy was identified in court as a friend of Allen's, named Marcus Welby.) "Shyne then dipped down and came back up with a gun and started firing," according to Allen. "I saw that Puffy had a gun in his right hand as I was running out. I could see both Puffy and Shyne firing guns." Another Wednesday witness, former Combs attorney Harvey Slovis, told the court that he had warned Combs not to meet or call the rap mogul's driver, Wardel Fenderson, because Slovis suspected that Fenderson was planning to cooperate with prosecutors (who charge that Combs tried to bribe Fenderson into saying that a gun in Combs's vehicle belonged to the driver), reports New York's Daily News.
