An 18-year-old student opened fire on his classmates on Thursday, wounding five people at a Southern California high school just a few miles from where two people were killed and 13 others were wounded in a shooting at Santana High School last month, reports ABC News. No one was killed in the latest incident, say police, because an alert school guard shot Jason Hoffman, the alleged gunman, in the face and buttocks before he could hurt anyone else. Hoffman allegedly began his attack inside a classroom at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon at around 12:45 p.m. local time, say San Diego Sheriff's Department officials. None of the injured parties is in danger of dying, say police. Flying debris as a result of the gunshots injured four other students and school staff members. Others reported symptoms of stress from the incident. Hoffman was taken in handcuffs to a hospital, where he underwent surgery and was listed in serious condition. Immediately after the shooting, the nearly 2,900 students of Granite Hills were evacuated and instructed to go to a nearby park where they could meet their parents. Granite is only a 10 minutes' drive from Santana High, where Charles "Andy" Williams, 15, allegedly killed two fellow students and wounded 13 others in a shooting spree on March 5.
